Artist of the Month: The Corn Keeps on Growing by Olivia Joy Misciagna
Wednesday, April 03, 2024
Tuesday, April 30, 2024
The Corn Keeps on Growing is a body of work created in response to the loss of a loved one and the acknowledgment that death, no matter how painful, is a universal truth of life. However, with death also comes life. The world is an ever continuing cycle and it is destructive to think that when a significant person in one's life passes that the world stops as well. Everything happens at the same time. While a loved one is on her deathbed, the crops on her farm were thriving in the August heat and sunshine. They are so incredibly alive, the pinnacle of growth and celebration. The people driving past her house on the road she lived could peek into the windows and see a family surrounding her in her last moments, but it is more likely that they just drove past, not noticing the house in the first place. Time keeps on ticking, the corn keeps on growing.
Olivia Joy Misciagna is a visual artist based in Syracuse, New York. She graduated with Highest Honors from Pratt Institute with Bachelor of Fine Art in Painting and minor in Art History from Pratt Institute in May of 2023. She currently works at the Everson Museum of Art and has a studio at Delavan Studios. Olivia has had work previously shown at Munson and Steuben Gallery at Pratt Institute and was the recipient of the Easton Pribble Award in 2021.
